Clos de I’anhel 2009, Corbieres, France

Before I get to the description, bloody fantastic, amazing, stonking, wonderful. I’m a fan of this wine.

Aromas of smoke, soft ripe black fruits. Taste following through with silky tannins, dry but not like others from the area, a little more rounded. There’s good acidity, tastes of cranberry, raspberry, tobacco and black fruits.

At about £10 a bottle it’s great value, amazing value. By this by the case.

Château de Villemajou, Grand Vin 2017, Corbieres, France

This is a blend of Carignan , Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache. There are aromas of liquorice and cloves, stewed fruit, spices and coffee. These come through in the flavours.

There are firm rounded tannins that hang around the mouth. It’s a fairly traditional style of wine from the Corbieres area.

At about Eur20 a bottle it’s a bit pricey for me. Good but not that good.

Villa St Jean, pays d’oc 2017, France

Aromas of green apple and flavours of gooseberry, green apple, citrus. It’s dry and reasonably acidic. It’s a cheap white wine from France. If I was to guess, I would say southern part due to the citrus and the level of acidity. The northern part should have more acidity and greener notes.

I had this on a team building event, cooking, next to the office. Great night although got there late and missed the cooking!

Plaisirs de loire, Brut Rose from Saumur, Loire Valley, France

A dry roses from Carrefour at €6. Is it any good well there are are a few aromas of faint red fruit, but on the the flavour front there are red currants and hints of strawberry and quite a lot of cream soda.

As long as you don’t expect to gold medal aromas and flavours this is actually really excellent value. It’s not Bouvet Ladubay sparkling but it’s good.

Saint Clair, Winemaker’s Blend Chardonnay 2016 from Marlborough, New Zealand

This comes from Waitrose and and I must say they’ve I’ve got quite a winner with this wine. There are aromas of melon and wiffs of citrus, the flavours of melon, citrus with hints vanilla and oak and a background creaminess.

This is a really good example of a dry Chardonnay from New Zealand and at £14 a bottle it’s not bad value. At the moment they have it down to £11 which which makes it excellent.

Australian Shiraz by Lidl

Does a cheap bottle of Australian Shiraz from Lidl taste any good?

Well

Well

Well

I can’t say it’s bad, aromas and flavours are very fruit driven, red, black fruits and soft tannins. It’s a cheap, dry, Australian Shiraz and it does what it says in the bottle. I had it over 3 evening and it was a little better each evening, a little more softer and expressive, not sure if I was getting use to it or the air helped.

I got this for £2.99 on offer, from £4.99, at that price it’s good value.

Mad – Dry by Tokaj – from Hungary

A dry Tokaj is not unusual these days but I have not come across that I like that much. This one is rather good, made with 100% Furmint there are aromas and flavours of citrus, esp lemon and a crispness that is refreshing. There is a lot of acidity in this wine which reminds me of some of the Chenins from South Africa that I’ve tried.

At £12 a bottle its not badly price but at this price point you can get a better dry wine from around the world.

Delaire Graff, Cabernet Franc Rose from South Africa

Made from Cabernet Franc this is a very good example of what can be done with the grape. With flavours of ripe strawberries candyfloss, red fruits and a creaminess. This has a crisp, dry finish and is lovely on its own or with fish and salad. At £12 a bottle it’s keenly priced.
