It’s been a whole since I tried a good cheap red from a supermarket, but this one from Lidl is worth buying. At £6 a bottle, it was a pleasant surprise. Dry with soft tannins and decent flavours of plum, blackberry, cherry with hints of chocolate and a little oak in the background. It’s been left longer than the producer would have recommended before drinking but I think that’s helped soften it up. We had ot with a slow cooked beef joint and it was a perfect fit.

I’ve said it before that supermarkets like Lidl sell decent wine at excellent prices and this Riesling from the Model, Germany shows it. At £5 a bottle it’s great value. A medium white wine with lots freshness, light aromas and flavours of apple, pear, lychee, melon, ripe pineapple and peach. Lots there, although quite subtle and great freshness.

It’s a great easy drinking wine on its own or with Asian food.

Lidl do some great and interesting wines, they do some ropy wine as well.

Is this a good and bad sparkling wine? The plastic cap that you have to peel off is not a good start and I would urge Lidl to get rid of that idea. The wine on the other hand is a surprise. Its really half decent. A sparkling NZ Sauvignon Blanc with all the usual flavours of gooseberry, citrus and with high acidity. Its dry, refreshing and at £10 a bottle very good value.

Australian Shiraz by Lidl

Does a cheap bottle of Australian Shiraz from Lidl taste any good?

Well

Well

Well

I can’t say it’s bad, aromas and flavours are very fruit driven, red, black fruits and soft tannins. It’s a cheap, dry, Australian Shiraz and it does what it says in the bottle. I had it over 3 evening and it was a little better each evening, a little more softer and expressive, not sure if I was getting use to it or the air helped.

I got this for £2.99 on offer, from £4.99, at that price it’s good value.
