Aldi have done it again with a cheap, £4 a bottle white wine that is perfect for just drinking. It’s dry, fresh with light flavours of citrus. A relatively simple wine, it’s no Gold medal winner but its perfect for parties and summer evenings sitting in the garden. Worth a case in anyone’s cupboard or under the stairs.

At £4 from Aldi you can’t expect much and therefore you won’t be disappointed with this red wine. The main problem is the thinness of it. Sure there’s some blackcurrant and plum flavours but these are quite non-discript. It’s a party wine, to be opened at the end of the party. Sorry but to be avoided.

Another New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from Aldi, although at £9.99 a bottle a bit more pricey than the usual offerings. It’s dry, reasonably light with subtler flavours. More citrus than gooseberry, more French than New Zealand. Can this be thd wine to change the minds of people buying Sauvignon Blanc from Aldi that it’s worth trading up? Probably, great wine especially with pizza, zesty salad or fish.

At times Aldi delights the wine drinker with a cheap wine that does what it’s meant to do, allow you to enjoy it without thinking about it and this Pierre Jaurant, Bordeaux Blend does that.

It’s a half decent dry red wine with firm tannins and lots of black fruit flavours. It’s uncomplicated and meant to just be drunk. At £5 a bottle it’s excellent value.

Is this another great wine from Aldi, a sparkling wine from England that is a trophy winner? Not quite but it’s rather good and for the summer a great alternative to champagne.

It’s dry and crisp with plenty of acidity and reasonable length. Theres citrus fruit at the front with a bit of yeast in the background but this is a fruit driven wine which I personally like very much. At £20 a bottle it’s on the mark for English sparkling wine.

Great with seafood and salads sitting in the garden.

Aldi, Henry of Pelham, The Falls, Riesling, Canada

Aldi sell some amazing wines and some terrible wines luckily this one made by Henry of Pelham is amazing especially for the price. The Falls, Riesling comes from the Niagara region in Canada. It’s very hard to get a bad bottle of Canadian wine in the UK but you normally have to spend 2 or 3 times the £7.99 the Aldi are charging for this wine.

It’s dry why with plenty of citrus fruit flavours with a slight kerosene undertone as you would expect from a new world Riesling but it’s fresh and credibly drinkable. This is the wine of the summer for me. THANK YOU Aldi for such a great wine.

Aldi, chassaux et fils, Grenache, Cinsault, Rose, 2020, France

The issue with Audi wine and not just with their rosé is that they produce an absolutely corkers and then it’s gone on which is really frustrating. This Rosie made with Grenache and Cinsault is a classic example it was an impulse purchase as it was £2.99 so not exactly a lot of money.

It’s a clean Rosie with lots of red fruit and aromas of strawberry and redcurrant it’s not elegant but it’s a nice rosé wine that I really enjoyed drinking in February, which is not a month associated with drinking such wine in the UK.

Aldi, English Bacchus, Chapel Down, England

Aldi have some great wines at great prices, sure you can look down your nose at them but you will be missing out as this Bacchus made by Chapel Down shows. How do I know this is from Chapel Down, their post code is on the back!

Bacchus is the English/German Sauvignon Blanc. There are aromas of Melon and Gooseberry with additional flavours of citrus and tropical fruit. Its dry, light and refreshing, perfect with asia food, sea food or in the garden on a summers evening enjoying the sun.

At £7.99 per bottle its cheaper than the 6 case price (£60 for 6 bottles) of the branded Chapel Down Bacchus from the vineyard and much cheaper than the £13 per bottle price. Aldi have done it again with a great wine at a great price.
