Maschio Cadoro, Valdobbiadene, Prosecco Superiore 2017, Italy

Prosecco gets a bad name as there is a lot of rubbish stuff out there but Maschio Cadoro produce some good stuff. Get a good one and it’s a viable alternative to Champagne. Many people don’t like the full on Champagnes with there bready, toast notes. Prosecco with its fruity and easy drinking can go down a treat.

This is one of the better ones out there, there’s peardrop on the nose which is joined with subtle hints of citrus and peach. Light and refined sum this Prosecco up.

Marks and Spencer’s Brut Cava, Prestige, Spain

People poo poo Cava as a cheap sparkling wine. Yet a good Cava is just a good as champagne. Its made in the same method and has the same love and attention in the making, just with different grapes. In this case its made with local Macabeo and Parellada grapes, 25% Parellada, 75% Macabeo.

Its got green apple and lemon aromas which are joined with limes and stone fruit hints and finished with a light creaminess. Its high acidity makes it perfect to go with oysters and shellfish but I guess most people with drink it on its own, which is just fine.

At £10 a bottle its good value, get it on offer with £3 or £4 off and its great value.

Curvee de Purcari Rose Brut 1827, Moldova

Moldova use to make 80% of the USSR wines. They have little history in wine making. This is a lovely sparkling rosé, it’s aromatic with rose and flora notes, dry with excellent acidity.

It’s not champagne, there’s a lack of toasty notes and that’s great. Enjoy this sparkling wine for what it is sparkling summer in a bottle.

Sire de Beaupre, Brut sparkling wine from Carrefour, France

Bought from Carrefour in Calais this is one of those cheap french sparkling wines. Fresh, clean, hints of pear and completely forgetable.

I’m not even going to try and find a refined aroma or flavour. Is this better than prosecco? Better than most but I’m not sure that’s a big positive. For me treat this as a base for drinking or for adding flavourings such as Cassis. Theres nothing bad but spend a few pounds more and get a bottle of Bouvet Ladubay sparkling wine.

At Eur5 a bottle it is what it is.

Cremant Poll-fabaire Brut, Luxembourg

Crisp, dry and fresh aromas of citrus, limes, lemon and grapefruit flavours.  Quite lovely after our main course to cleanse our palette before biscuits and cheese. Cremant is not generally expensive but usually excellent. This is no exception. At £10 a bottle it’s great wine and great value.

Wine tasting at the Great Framingham Sausage Festival

Each year Framingham in Suffolk host a sausage festival. In a good year about 10,000 people are expected to be there. This year the co-op hosted a VIP wine tasting with host Alison from www.wineathome.co.uk and Jane and Peter from Toppesfield Vineyard. There were 6 wines, a Cava, a prosecco, an English white a rose, an Australia Cab Sav and a Chilian Carmenere.

All the wines were good examples. The Cava was light with subtle tropical fruit flavours and breast notes. The prosecco was, well prosecco. I preferred to drink the Cava as it had more depth and flavours. The Toppesfield English Bacchus was truly excellent, it gets more flavours and refined each month I try it. The Shawsgate rose was pretty good, decent red fruit aromas and not as over powering on the taste buds as the colour might suggest. I’m a big Provence rose fan and the darker roses are usually my glass of wine. The 2 reds were a surprise. Carmenere was fruity, a bit of spice and vanilla thrown in, very happy I was. The Cab Sav was a JC moment, possibly the best was served last and one of the best reds I’ve tasted in a long time. Great black and red fruit aromas and flavours, firm but not over powering tannins, long finish and at £9 a bottle very reasonable.

Plaisirs de loire, Brut Rose from Saumur, Loire Valley, France

A dry roses from Carrefour at €6. Is it any good well there are are a few aromas of faint red fruit, but on the the flavour front there are red currants and hints of strawberry and quite a lot of cream soda.

As long as you don’t expect to gold medal aromas and flavours this is actually really excellent value. It’s not Bouvet Ladubay sparkling but it’s good.

Blanquette De Limoux from Carrefour, France

Is a Eur5 bottle of sparkling wine from Carrefour any good? This is a bottle of Blanquette De Limoux at Eur5. The first thing that hits you is the intense aromas of apple cider and pear from mauzac grapes, there’s also Chardonnay and Chenin in there. The flavours are more pear. It’s dry and light but a little one dimensional. For Eur5 it’s on the mark cash wise but Carrefour do better for about the same money.
