Aldi, Bowler and Brolly, sparkling wine, England

Is this another great wine from Aldi, a sparkling wine from England that is a trophy winner? Not quite but it’s rather good and for the summer a great alternative to champagne.

It’s dry and crisp with plenty of acidity and reasonable length. Theres citrus fruit at the front with a bit of yeast in the background but this is a fruit driven wine which I personally like very much. At £20 a bottle it’s on the mark for English sparkling wine.

Great with seafood and salads sitting in the garden.

Harrow and Hope, Vintage 2017, Buckinghamshire, England

Harrow and Hope, Vintage 2017 is their flagship sparkling wine and at £38 a bottle it needs to be excellent and I must admit it is. It dry crisp with an excellent length of finish there’s richness in all parts of the palate. The citrus notes come through without being harsh and the acidity is just right, perfect on its own or with seafood.

It’s on a par with top notch champagne, although it’s a shame that it’s £38 a bottle as it will put people off trying it.

Harrow and Hope, Rosé NV, Buckinghamshire, England

Harrow and Hope, Rosé NV, Buckinghamshire, England

Harrow and Hope, Rosé NV Harrow and Hope, Rosé NV, Buckinghamshire, England is a very good sparkling rose which after tasting the white NV was a relief.  It’s not that the white was bad but this Rosé is so much better. It’s dry and crisp with subtle flavours of red fruit that poke through with a good long finish and at only £2 more than the white NV it’s much better value I think.

A great drink in the summer ehen sitting on the garden.

Harrow and Hope, NV Brut, Buckinghamshire, England

Harrow and Hope, NV Brut, Buckinghamshire, England

Harrow and Hope from Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England produces some fantastic sparking wine but unfortunately this NV falls a little short. It’s not as good as it was when i last tried the NV white in 2019. It’s a shame, it’s not bad but there is a definite fall off on the back palette and this becomes apparent when you try the other sparkling wines

It’s nice and crisp and dry and with decent citrus flavours, the length is OK but it’s outshone by the others in their range. At £30 a bottle you should get more for the money.

Setley Ridge, Red blend, New Forest, England

English red wine is hard to get right and this blend of Regent, Rondo and Triomphe D’Alsace grapes gives it quite a rustic taste and aroma, quite farmyeard on the nose and smokey and woody finish on the taste.

Its pretty light and very low tannins. This is either an acquired taste wine or one to drink with food.

English Rose wine has come a long way in recent years and this one from Copdock Hall in Suffolk shows it it’s pretty good stuff. It’s not your light rosé in colour and this gives you a heads up on the flavour.

You get a real hit or strawberries and raspberries with this rose much more than you would a Provence. Its actually a nice change, I’m not sure I’d want a drink this all summer long but a few bottles in the storeroom sounds great.

Aldi, English Bacchus, Chapel Down, England

Aldi have some great wines at great prices, sure you can look down your nose at them but you will be missing out as this Bacchus made by Chapel Down shows. How do I know this is from Chapel Down, their post code is on the back!

Bacchus is the English/German Sauvignon Blanc. There are aromas of Melon and Gooseberry with additional flavours of citrus and tropical fruit. Its dry, light and refreshing, perfect with asia food, sea food or in the garden on a summers evening enjoying the sun.

At £7.99 per bottle its cheaper than the 6 case price (£60 for 6 bottles) of the branded Chapel Down Bacchus from the vineyard and much cheaper than the £13 per bottle price. Aldi have done it again with a great wine at a great price.

Chapel Down, Bacchus Sparkling, 2019, England

Chapel Down make approx 1 million bottle of wine a year and this offering of sparkling Bacchus shows that a big(ish) UK wine maker can make decent wine.

With this dry white wine you get aromas and flavours of gooseberry, elderflower, pineapple and citrus with an undertone of grapefruit nodding its way through. Sure there are places like Hambledon or Camel Valley that make better but they also cost more and at £18 a bottle this is great alternative.

Tuffon Hall, Bacchus, 2015, East Anglia, England

East Anglia can produce some fantastic Bacchus wine and Tuffon Hall is in this category. A wonderful light lemon color with aromas of grass, green apple and hints of pineapple. It’s a light wine in texture and the flavors are subtle with citrus, lemon, pineapple and a creaminess undertone that makes this dry white wine absolutely delicious.

At about £12 a bottle it’s on the money for English wine, which is a shame in some ways as it will put some people off what is an excellent white wine.

Chet and Waveney, Regent, dry rosé, 2017, England

England produces alot rosé and some are light with little taste and some are full of flavour like this one from Chet and Waveney in Norfolk. Made from the Regent grape, this 2017 vintage has smells of strawberries, redcurrant and hints of cream soda, it’s delightful. Theres a lot of flavour in this and good flavours. On taste front you get what you smell with a bit of raspberry. Well balanced and very smooth this is an outstanding rosé from any country. With or without food this is wonderful. The Redwing line is the latest Regent which I think retails at about £12 a bottle and is very good value, one of my top 5 rosé wines.
