Torreon de Paredes, Carmenère, 2020, Chile

Chile makes great Carmenère but this Torreon de Paredes from 2020 is outstanding. Soft and silky the tannins are subtle just doing their thing in the background. Aromas and flavours of plum, blackcurrant and hints of chocolate and tobacco with a little oak and smoke rounding it off. At £26 a bottle it’s not cheap but worth it.

  1. This orange wine from Telavi wine cellar in Georgia is quite a surprise. The nose is quite delightful with blossom and ripe citrus drawing you in. The taste is a little off though. The back pallette is catered for with decent length but theres little initial flavour.  It’s not a bad wine but it’s a bit thin and lacking. The IWC gave it a 93 point silver which I struggle to see. Bronze 87 would be my thoughts.

Domaine Les Ondines, Vacqueyras, Passion Blanc, 2020, Rhone, France

This Rhone white wine from Domaine Les Ondines is rather good. With medium body and long length you taste the components that the 4 grape varieties add – Grenache blanc at 35%, Clairette at 35%, Roussanne at 20% and Bourboulenc at 10%. Theres citrus and melon with a hint of eucalyptus. It’s a grown up wine to be tasted rather than guzzled.

At £15 a bootle it’s pretty decent value too. Pair with a fish dish or roast chicken.

Santa Rita, Triple C, 2020, Maipo Valley, Chile

If you like red wine then I suggest you just buy it, because this Triple C from Santa Rita is one of the best reds I have ever tasted.

A Bordeaux blend of Cab Sav, Cab Franc and Carmenere its a bold, dry red, with firm tannins and long black plum and blackberry flavour’s. There chunks of chocolate and a smokey, earthiness sitting in the background, oak and vanilla round this off beautifully.

At £15 a bottle from Majestic its a steal. Fantastic.

Vasse Felix ‘Filius’ Cabernet-Merlot, 2020, Margaret River, Australia

Another Australian red wine at £10 a bottle, another average red, well no. This is a step or 2 above most in the under £15 bracket. Dry and pretty bold but not sledge hammer bold. Black and red fruits with a bit of spice and rounded but firm tannins. Great with red meat or pasta. Alternatively in front of the fire watch TV.

If you don’t like Chardonnay then try a good white Burgundy because you can see the grape at its best and this one from Domaine du Bicheron is pretty good, not amazing but at £16 a bottle it’s a good starting place. Dry, light with high acidity and has citrus flavours and a little apple poking through. There’s a minerality, cleaness and freshness with good length. Great with fish or a zesty salad.

Creation, Pinot Noir, Walker Bay, 2020, South Africa

I’ve had Creation, Pinot Noir, from previous vintages before and remembered it being better. Its dry, reasonably light but it’s also light on flavours. There’s lots of red cherry a hint of vanilla and oak that occasionally comes through but it’s just light, one dimensional. The wife loved it and her palette is much better than mine so I will bow to her judgement that it’s got more going on than I could taste.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Escudo Rojo, Grand Reserve, 2020, Chile

Made with Cabernet Sauvignon,  Carmenère, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot this red wine from the Maipo Valley has lots going on. Dry and rich it’s boldness would make this best with red meat. That said there are plenty of flavours of blackcurrent with cherry and hints of raspberry, with a little chocolate and vanilla in the background. The oak is a little heavy for me but that’s more personal.

At £15 a bottle it’s a bit pricy but worth a try.

This white wine from the luave Valley from Chateau de l’Hyverniere is quite wonderful. It’s a dry white but quite light and frisky with high acidity which would make this perfect to go with seafood full stop there are flavors of citrus, lemon and grapefruit and green apple. There’s a mineral undertone which makes this quite a fabulous wine and at under £8 a bottle it’s great value.

Rhonea, Notre Dame des Vignes, Visan, 2020, Rhone, France

This is a typical Rhone style red wine made with the Grenache and Syrah grapes. It has depth and length, its dry with good balance acidity and lots of black fruit flavours with hints of Violet and the smackering of pepper. At £10 a bottle is excellent value
