Vina Arnaiz, Verdejo, 2019, Rueba, Spain

Spain produces and also lots of wine and not all of it particularly good however this one from Vina Arnaiz is pretty good, I’ll go as far as say is excellent.

Dry, fresh and full of flavour. There’s a real freshness on the nose with delicate notes of citrus and stone fruit. There’s flavours of lemon and lime with a little bit of grapefruit. The acidity thats there, you know it’s there but so well integrated, it would be fantastic with seafood. Downside is that you can easily drink a bottle of this in one go.

I do like a Rhône valley white but this one from Saint Peray has passed its best though, which is a shame because you can still taste what was.

You get hints of ripe citrus, grapefruit with honey on the nose and with flavours that follow on with peach, almond, melon with buttery notes and a grown up feel. It’s a very acidic wine dry but with good body and I suspect if I had drank this after 2 or 3 years from bottling it would have been a really excellent wine. So lesson learnt, don’t save what you think is great wine to long.

Wine from Greece is not the first choice for many wine drinkers but this one from Alpha Estates is very good. It has mid yellow colour, going towards straw.

Its a concentrated wine both in smell with citrus and stone fruit coming though. The taste is clean with good length and a decent balance on the flavour front with lemon, peach and flint notes working together.

This is a good wine.

Sometimes there’s a wine that is so good, so yummy that you savour every drop and this Château Pierre-Bise, Coteaux du Layon-Beaulieu, Clos de la Soucherie, a desert wine is one of these.

Its got aromas of baked fruits, raisins and these just hang there. The taste is rich all round with the baked fruit coming though, its not overly sticky but each drop is full of flavour. I could go on about who fabulous this is but I would just drink it.

Wonderful with cheese or on its own.

This dry white wine from northern Italy went very well with lobster. Not my usual start to a review but it did go very well.

There are aromas and flavours of pineapple and citrus with light oaky notes. Its a reasonably bold wine with good acidity levels, flavours are well balanced and great with seafood.

Its a very good italian white wine.

Castello del Trebbio, Congiura, Bianco Toscana, Tuscany, Italy

Its unusual for a Tuscan white to be made with Riesling but this wine from Castello del Trebbio gains when adding it to the Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay grapes.

It has a wonderful straw colour with a fresh mineral aromas and flavours with apple and pears and notes of almonds and peach. There’s some complexity to this dry white and it would be well paired with seafood. A decent wine but not fantasic.

Pazo Senorans, Albarino, 2016, Spain

£15 a bottle is a decent amount to pay for a wine, you want a good bottle but paying that for an Albarino is hard when there are so many good ones out their for less but this Albarino from Pazo Senorans is very good.

There’s loads going on, subtle but the package is well done. The colour is a wonderful lemon colour and there are aromas of pear, lemon, mellon, peaches and additional flavours of citrus, grapefruit and minerality. Its dry, light, decent wack of acidity, clean and quite elegant.

Its a bit pricey and I should have saved some for the next day but I loved it, its very good, excellent if the price was cheaper but then that’s my tightness 😉 shining through, price wise.

Lidl, Feinherb Klusserather, St Michael, Riesling, Model, Germany

I’ve said it before that supermarkets like Lidl sell decent wine at excellent prices and this Riesling from the Model, Germany shows it. At £5 a bottle it’s great value. A medium white wine with lots freshness, light aromas and flavours of apple, pear, lychee, melon, ripe pineapple and peach. Lots there, although quite subtle and great freshness.

It’s a great easy drinking wine on its own or with Asian food.

Domaine De La Desoucherie, Cheverny, 2013, Loire Valley, France

This white wine from the Domaine De La Desoucherie in the Loire Valley is typical of the whites from the region.

Its subtle and easy drinking, there are aromas and flavours of citrus and its about Eur8 a bottle.  We picked this up when visiting the Loire Valley and its a shame in many ways that we can’t get this in the UK. Its a great white for the summer to just drink in the sun.

Bodegas Eylo, 2018, Rueba, Spain

As the weather gets colder I find I’m drinking lots more red wine, so I thought I’d try a white and this one from Spain is different to what I would normally have. It’s a deep straw colour, dry but with fruit. There are aromas of grapefruit and oak and these follow through with a flavours. it’s a heavier white wine than I would normally drink and I think on its own it’s not my taste but I can see this with a creamy pasta dish or a game bird dish, something with a little bit more flavour than just chicken.

At £7 a bottle and a decanter bronze medal it’s ok but have with food.
