Domaine de Mourchon, seguret Grand Reserve 2011, Rhone villages

Domaine de Mourchon know how to make good wine and this Seguret Grand Reserve 2011 is a good.  Although this probably should have been drunk 3 or 4 years ago it still had a full body, with smooth tannins that were punchy with flavours of raspberry, redcurrants and plum with liquorice and pepper in the background. Younger vintages are selling for around £20, which is a little expensive but that said it is a very good wine. Certainly one to have with food, preferably cheese and biscuits or a good steak.

Timo Dienhart, Spätburgunder Trocken, 2016, Mosel, Germany

Light, smooth and dry are 3 words to describe this Timo Dienhart, Spätburgunder from the Mosel.

There’s flavours of cherry, raspberry, with earthy notes and hints of pine and oak and a little coffee poking through. It went well with veggie home made pizza but its light enough to have with meaty fish or white meat.

Langlois-Chateau, Vieilles Vignes, Saumur, Loire, France

Purchased on our trip to the Loire this white wine from Langlois-Chateau in Saumur in the Loire. Made with Chenin its dry, light and acidic. Loads of aromas and flavours of yellow apple, pear and pineapple with notes of vanilla and hints of butter, a slight creaminess and a little honey in there.

At £20 a bottle its not cheap but its a quality wine. Enjoy with friends over a meal, went well with home made pizza.

Made with 100% Turbiana grapes this white from Lombardy, Italy is fresh, clean, fruity with hints of stone fruits. It’s uncomplicated but its a lovely wine that is meant to be drunk in the sun, with food and not thought about too much. Its a wine to have with friends.

Another over oaked red wine from Australia or a fabulous Shiraz at a great price? well this Shiraz from the Bird In Hand in South Australian is more the later, smells and flavours of blackberry, plum, pepper and other spices with hints of chocolate, licorice and eucalyptus. Its dry with medium tannins and good length.

At £14 a bottle from Tesco its pretty good value, better when its on offer though.

Chateau Bellerive, Quarts de Chaume, 2005, Loire, France

I loved this wine from Chateau Bellerive in the Loire, it was AMAZING, lush and full of flavour. Whats best is this desert wine is in a full sized bottle – magic.

There are flavours and aromas of honey, marmalade, peach, orange and mineral undertones that are well balanced and not over powered by sweetness. At £40 a bottle its well worth trying and taking your time over it. Have it with fresh fruit to bring out the best.

San Pedro, Altair, 2017, Cachapoal, Chile

San Pedro know how to make wine and this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc and Syrah is quite amazing. There lots of black and red fruit, tobacco and coffee notes which have great length and smoothness on the taste buds. Its like an electric car, quiet, smooth and making you wonder why you have not got a cellar full of it. Then the price rears its head – at £40 a bottle that’s why you don’t have a cellar full of it. But a bottle or 2?

Chet Valley, Jubilee Blanc de Blanc 2020, Norfolk, UK

Chet Valley, Jubilee Blanc de Blanc 2020 from Norfolk was made with the Queen’s 70th jubilee celebrations in mind. It’s easy to dismiss this as all marketing, but this is truly an excellent sparkling wine. Made with 100% chardonnay it has many characteristics of champagne but is that little bit lighter with slightly less toasty notes and more fruit driven.

It’s got to be one of the best English sparkling wines I tried in a long time. It’s a shame that it’s £30 a bottle because it would put people off, but that’s the cost of champagne beating wine from the UK.

Chapel Down, Kits Coty, Chardonnay, 2013, UK

If you think you can’t keep English wine for years before drinking it you’re wrong and this is exactly the bottle to try. Chapel Down make a lot of wine and a million bottles on a year but this kits coty is one of their premier lines.

Even after 8-years it is stunning wine to taste and although it costs over £25 a bottle it’s a must to try anyone that likes white wine. A worthy gold medal winner.

Theres still complexity in this wine with aromas of peach and apple, apricot with flinty under notes and subtle oak and a very long finish.

With summer and sitting out in the garden eating salads and barbecues, talking with friends this is got to be one to put on the menu.

Klet Krsko, Classic Zeleni Silvanec, 2017, Slovenia

I like trying different wines and this Silvaner grape base white from Klet Krsko in Slovenia is quite good. Its very green and flinty with quite aromatic on the taste but quite neutral on the nose. It’s like a ford fiesta, to be used or in this case drunk but think of it too much.

Its a white wine that is best with food, fish would be good but as the summer is on us then a zesty salad would be a good choice. At under £10 its decent value.
