Shawsgate, Rosé, 2016, Suffolk, UK

Shawsgate is based in Suffolk, in the UK and does a rather good red wine, but this time I’m trying Rosé which is actually really very good, not just for English Rosé but in general. This is fine stuff at £10 a bottle excellent value.

It has redcurrant and raspberry on the nose and this follows through in a taste with stone fruit and a ziggingness that is fresh, slightly on the sweetest side but it’s more of an undertone sweetness that makes this ready excellent summer drinking. If this was the only rosé I had all summer I would not be disappointed. It’s probably the best rosé I’ve had in 2021.

English Rose wine has come a long way in recent years and this one from Copdock Hall in Suffolk shows it it’s pretty good stuff. It’s not your light rosé in colour and this gives you a heads up on the flavour.

You get a real hit or strawberries and raspberries with this rose much more than you would a Provence. Its actually a nice change, I’m not sure I’d want a drink this all summer long but a few bottles in the storeroom sounds great.

Calmel & Joseph, Ams Tram Gram, Ceres, Rose, Languedoc, France

Calmel & Joseph, Ams Tram Gram, Ceres, Rose, Languedoc, France

I love Languedoc rose wine, easy drinking and perfect for the summer and this is what this Calmel & Joseph, Ams Tram Gram, Ceres rose wine is like.

Made with 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Cinsault, 30% Grenache noir this is a wonderful pale pink in colour with light fruity notes of wild strawberry and pink grapefruit. Its a fresh, crisp wine with light flavours of grapefruit and raspberry with a hint lemon. Its acidic and dry but the freshness brings these into line.

Pair this with a chicken or prawn salad for the perfect summer lunch and at about Eur7 a bottle it won’t break the bank.

Delaire Graff, Cabernet Franc Rose from South Africa

Made from Cabernet Franc this is a very good example of what can be done with the grape. With flavours of ripe strawberries candyfloss, red fruits and a creaminess. This has a crisp, dry finish and is lovely on its own or with fish and salad. At £12 a bottle it’s keenly priced.

Jean Giner -Cinsault from South of France

Not a standard grape for a supermarket but well planted in the South of France, it has lovely aromas of strawberry and red fruits and these come through in the taste.

Light and fruity this a lovely easy drinking rose that can’t be criticised, exactly what you expect from southern French rose.

Majestic wine makers series rose

As summer fast approaches the salads come out at meal times, the BBQ gets pulled out and the garden furniture gets used. It’s also the time when Rose wine gets drunk. Sure us Brits don’t get the weather that Provence in France gets but we do like their wine, drunk in the garden. This is a typical Provence Rose, light, dry, hints of strawberry, peach and easy drinking. Not a gold medal winner but does what it says on the bottle. At under £10 a bottle Majestic have got it right with this wine.
