Dornfelder grapes

Dornfelder grapes

Norfolk produces a surprisingly excellent range of wines, Winbirri vineyard took home a Decanter World Wine Awards Trophy in 2017. Then theres Flint Vineyard producing small batch wines for its club members that are excellent, their main wines are pretty good too.

Chet and Waveney Vineyard is another that produce great wines. It uses more Germanic grape verities to produce excellent drink now wine. Their 2 sparkling wines are easy drinking types.

Siskin 2018 – Solaris grape

This still white wine is light in colour, pale lemon and very dry. There are aromas of Lemon, lychee, grapefruit, lime and a little floral. Flavours of green apple, grass, blossom and a hint of honey. Great with salad or fish.

Redwing 2081 – Regent grape

A dry rose, Salmon in colour with Raspberry, strawberry and rose aromas. Fruity with citrus overertones. Place with fish or chicken.

Swift – Schonburger grape

Pale lemon in colour with a hint of pink. Aromas of lemon sherbet and tropical fruit that feeds into the flavours. Theres less acidity than the Siskin and long lasting flavours that the other wines tried. Just drink it.

Skylark Sparkling – Phoenix and Seyval Blanc grapes

2017 Brut. This is made using the Charmat method – Second fermented in the vat and bottled under pressure, like Prosecco. It has a light fruit aroma and light fruit flavours.

2018 version has the grape Regent in it and is more intense with a pinky look. It has aromatic and redcurrant aromas. Those longer flavours reminds more fevertree aromatic tonic water that’s got extra sparkle. Thats not a criticism, its really refreshing and just a little different, and for the better.

2018 Demi sec version. Light salmon in colour, aromas of sweetness and redcurrant. Flavours of redcurrant, not really to my taste, it’s a demi-sec thing with me.

2016 Horatio – Phoenix, Seyval Blanc and Regent grapes,

This is made with the champagne method to give a dry rose sparkling thats fresh and fruity, excellent. Great on its own or with shell fish.

Wine tasting at the Great Framingham Sausage Festival

Each year Framingham in Suffolk host a sausage festival. In a good year about 10,000 people are expected to be there. This year the co-op hosted a VIP wine tasting with host Alison from www.wineathome.co.uk and Jane and Peter from Toppesfield Vineyard. There were 6 wines, a Cava, a prosecco, an English white a rose, an Australia Cab Sav and a Chilian Carmenere.

All the wines were good examples. The Cava was light with subtle tropical fruit flavours and breast notes. The prosecco was, well prosecco. I preferred to drink the Cava as it had more depth and flavours. The Toppesfield English Bacchus was truly excellent, it gets more flavours and refined each month I try it. The Shawsgate rose was pretty good, decent red fruit aromas and not as over powering on the taste buds as the colour might suggest. I’m a big Provence rose fan and the darker roses are usually my glass of wine. The 2 reds were a surprise. Carmenere was fruity, a bit of spice and vanilla thrown in, very happy I was. The Cab Sav was a JC moment, possibly the best was served last and one of the best reds I’ve tasted in a long time. Great black and red fruit aromas and flavours, firm but not over powering tannins, long finish and at £9 a bottle very reasonable.

Oastbrook, Pinot Gris 2018, East Sussex, UK

Ok, so Pinot Gris is not you usual white wine thats been produced from the UK which you drink. Bacchus is what most people drinking UK white wine, first taste with a number of other german grapes as a blend following.
There are aromas and flavours of tropical fruits, lemons, limes and mellon with a fresh minerality that is light and refreshing. Fantastic, first rate, such a great alternative to Bacchus. Oastbrook have certainly shown that they can offer world winning wine. At £19 a bottle its not cheap even by UK standards but I think you need to look at this in world context. If you are prepared to pay £30 for a great white Burgundy then why not under £20 for a great Pinot Gris from the UK where the quality is equal (alright different grapes but you get the picture)

Winemakers and wine sellers evening

Winemakers and wine sellers evening - wines drunk

Winemakers and wine sellers evening – wines drunk

Each year we invite a few winemakers and people in the wine industry for a bit of food, drink.and possibly intelligent conversation, or at least conversation! In past years this has included people from the Decanter magazine, winemakers and wine sellers. Usually we have some English wine, unusual wine, weird wine and crackingly good wine. This evening was no different. Above are the wines drunk. For food we had tapas style food, breads, pates, fish, meat and cheese selections.

Going from left to right we started with Mexican sparkling wine made with Macabeu (a spanish grape), Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. A little sweet for my taste but more of the Macabeu grape character coming through. It got a bronze medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Next was Bethnal Bubbles from a winery in Bethnal Green, east end of London. Some said weird, I said “oooohhhhh, it’s weird” unfiltered sparkling with a hoppy taste and green apple notes. At £23 a bottle it’s a good party conversation piece but not one I’ll get.

Then we went through some English white wines, light and fruity with lots of citrus. The Toppesfield vineyard 2018 Bacchus was excellent, I tried it just after bottling and thought they over extracted, a few months on and the wine is tasting much better with much more fruit. The Ashdown Estate from Bluebell vineyard white was lighter but very drinkable.

The Alsace Schlumberger Grand Cru 2014 Riesling. Full rich flavours of citrus, peach, lychee and a smell of petroleum, magnificent. Burnt Foot Pinot Noir rose followed. Good red fruit flavours and one of the better Pinot Noir wines from the UK.

Next was King Coel red, 20 year old English red that tasted fresh and had vibrant red fruit flavours. For me the highlight as it was under the winemakers stairs for much of that time, please see the blog for a write up. The Potash vineyard red was only 7 years old! but had lost some of its fruit flavours, drinkable but one wine to slip and not knock back, so to enjoy the flavours. A South Africa red followed, Lemberg-Louis 2016 made with Shiraz, Mourvedre and Granache, richer red fruit flavours with black cherry and higher tannins, excellent with the meat course.

The last wines were 2 late bottle vintage ports, grahams 2005 and Quinta Sta Eufemia 2019, both excellent ruby ports with rich fruit and smooth finish were drunk with the cheese course and on their own and finally we had a Czech desert wine, Pechor Vinarstvi 2015 Ryzlink Rynsky, light and full of citrus flavour.

The next afternoon the ones that stayed and had a midd BBQ felt the long night!

Copford Hall Bacchus 2017

Copdock Hall from Suffolk is a small producer but their wines are of a good standard. This has hints of grass and lychee with a little gooseberry. it’s lighter than the usual British bacchus and it makes a refreshing change. It’s a great summer drinking wine for the garden and it’s reasonable value at about 13 pounds bottle.

Barnsole Kent classic 2014 white wine

In 2019 a 2014 English wine maybe a little bit on the old side for most people. They consider drinking English wine earlier rather than later.  However Barnsole is a quality producer and this goes to show that 5 years on this tastes absolutely delicious. It’s off dry with huge chunks of honey and honeysuckle aromas and flavours with peach blossom in the background, its aromatic and goes absolutely amazing with a veggie curry.

Toppesfield Bacchus and Rose

Well I had a real treat this weekend trying the Toppesfield Bacchus and Rose 2017 and also the 2016 Rose wine as a comparison. I’ve blog about the Bacchus before and it’s a real favourite of mine.

So the Bacchus first, clean fresh and said to be the english Sauvignon Blanc. It is closer to the french Sauvignon Blanc than the gooseberry fueled New Zealand one. There are flavours of grass, elderflower and hints of gooseberry. Its only 10.5% so great for a summer day. This is a fantastic example of a quality english white wine.

The Rose wine is very good. The 2016 has wild strawberries on the taste with a clean refreshing finish, the 2017 vintage is lighter than the 2016 one but still has the same flavour of strawberries and very easy to drink. 1 bottle or 2 would be the first question! Drinking these 3 wines side by side really helps to highlight the subtle flavours.

At £13 a bottle it’s not the cheapest but this is quality english wine and available at the Co-Op around East Anglia, UK.

Toppesfield Bacchus Reserve 2017

Ooooohhhh, Bacchus. I’m a fan of Bacchus – England’s Sav Blanc. What i like about a good Bacchus is that is dry, light and lowish in alcohol, about 10 ABV with delicate flavours and aromas of gooseberry, elderflower and honeysuckle. Toppesfield is spot on the mark. This is about as good as it gets. Toppesfield normanly tops the local vineyard association award and they complete against Winbirri, who won a trophy at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards for their Bacchus. Toppesfield got a Silver medal at the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, personally I thought it was better than a silver. At £13 a bottle its not cheap, just drink less and go for a a step up in quality.
