Australian Shiraz by Lidl

Does a cheap bottle of Australian Shiraz from Lidl taste any good?

Well

Well

Well

I can’t say it’s bad, aromas and flavours are very fruit driven, red, black fruits and soft tannins. It’s a cheap, dry, Australian Shiraz and it does what it says in the bottle. I had it over 3 evening and it was a little better each evening, a little more softer and expressive, not sure if I was getting use to it or the air helped.

I got this for £2.99 on offer, from £4.99, at that price it’s good value.

Gatt, High Eden Single Vineyard Shiraz 2016 from Australia

From one of the top producers of Eden Valley you would expect alot and you get it.

Smooth with aromas of sweet spice, malberry white pepper, clove’s. The texture and flavours are a little jammy and creamy but not full on. There’s plenty of dark fruit in there and it’s perfect with BBQ steak and a cheese board.
At £30 a bottle it’s not cheap but you get what you pay for, delicious.

Laithwaites McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017 – Australia

A typical Australian Shiraz is a good start to describe this wine. I could start with saying that this is a very good example. It’s a dry wine with firm tannins that grip the mouth. There are aromas of black fruits and black cherry especially. These follow through in the taste added to with spice, pepper and clove’s. Lots going on which shows a very good winemaker has been involved in the making of this wine. At £15 a bottle it’s at the higher end of the price bracket which you would expect.

Houghton Thomas Yule Shiraz 2014 – Western Australia

From the Frankland River area of Western Australia this is not your average bottle of wine. The wine has changed going into garnet in colour with aromas of black cherry, spice and Smokey under tones which fade very quickly Kevin this is 5 years old not totally surprising however at AUD70 a bottle it should be better than this. Tannins are present but this is a more fruit driven wine now and that’s I think positive thing.

At AUD 70 a bottle it’s a little pricy, excellent but pricey.

Marks and Spencer Burra Brook 2015 Australian Shiraz

Super market wines have come a long way in the last decade or so. This Shiraz is a typical Australian red, plum and cherry on the taste with a hint of cloves and herbs. I found it best to leave it as it improved by the next day. As part of a  meal for 2 package I can’t fault it, would I buy it? No Spencer Burra Brook 2015 Australian Shiraz

Penfolds Bin 2 – Shiraz Mataro 2013

Aromas of Vanilla, spice and chocolate, flavours of those with blackcurrant, liquorice and it has a gamey hint in there. Tannins are well integrated and its dry, you feel the mouth tighten after a taste. As well as Shiraz there is a bit of Mourvedre, approx 10% which follows through on the Rhone wine character. Penfolds have been making the bin 2 range since the 1960’s and at £15 a bottle its a great wine at a great price. For me I would have it with food, a steak or a tomato based pasta dish.

Two Hands – Smooth Operator Australian Malbec 2017

Clare Valley Malbec, not one that you think of straight away, Argentine Malbec would be most peoples first thought for this grape. Smooth operator does sum this one up nicely. The tannins are well integrated and there are delicious flavours of black fruits, vanilla and spice. This is lighter than you may fine with an Argentine Malbec and that’s for the better. Sure have it with a steak but equally have it on its own, fantastic. At £20 its not cheap but it’s quality.

Wolf Blass – Longhorne Creek Cab Shiraz 2013

A fine Wolf Blass?

A few years ago I was drinking the yellow label Wolf Blass and it was ok, drink it and forget it. Then I had a white label bottle which I realised, after opening and tasting it, that I shouldn’t have. It was very good and if I had waited it would have been even better. At £40 a bottle it should have been saved for a special occasion according to the wife.

Now I have tried the Wolf Blass Langhorne Cab Shiraz 2013. Its not quite up to the quality of the white label but its good, very good. Its pretty smooth with decent structure, firm tannins and red fruit. Its a medium bodied wine which should be drunk with food, meat or tomato, something that will balance the tannins. Leave it for a 5-10 years or even a little longer to soften those tannins.
