Cillar de Silos, La Viña de Amalio, Tempranillo, Spain

This tempranillo from Cillar de Silos is quite a surprise. Bold and pretty dry with medium tannins with very good length. There are plenty of flavours of blackcurrant and plum, chocolate and oak notes with licorice and mint hints in the background.

At £60 a bottle it’s a bit overpriced.  Then again when you go over £30 a bottle it probably won’t make sny difference,  the only question is, is it any good and yes this is very good. Have with red meat or a tomato pasta dish to drink out the best.

Made with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo this red from Spain got a commended at the Decanter international wine awards in 2020, I think they’re missing something.

Aromas of red fruit and oak with a hint of smokiness. It’s a dry wine with tannings easy drinking the favours maybe a little lacking but it’s very easy drinking and for a drinker on a summer’s day this is pretty good.

It’s €18 which is the biggest problem I have with it, it’s too much money for what it is. It’s good, it’s just not €18 good.

Ontinium, Capitan Julian, Tempranillo 2015, Spain

Capitan Julian, Tempranillo is dry, bold with a dollop of oak. You could sum up this wine like that, but there’s more.

There’s black fruit on the nose and oaky notes. Its smooth on the palate with blackberry, vanilla, spice and hints of tobacco with firm, but not overly powerful tannins. Steak went very well with this wine and even a few days later it was easy drinking on its own.

Its the price that’s the issue here. At £6 a bottle its ridiculously cheap. how, why they are selling it this cheap is a mystery. Brilliant for the drinker though.

Rioja Vega 2016, Spain

Made with 75% Tempranillo and 25% Graciano this is a limited edition of only 84,320 bottles! its got a herbaceous and red fruit aroma. There’s a plum and cherry hit on the taste buds, more cherry but subtle background flavours of other fruit, mainly plum but also a little redcurrant which have a good length. There’s definitely tannins, a little rough though which obscure the spice notes.

Have this with food and its better, you need food with a bite, a bit spicy to help soften the tannins and match the little bit of spice in the wine, in my case veggy fajitas.

At £13 a bottle its a bit pricey. A bronze medal winner at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2019, its good but it should be under £10.

Marque’s de Riscal 2007 Grand Reserva

They have been making wine for over 2 hundred years and it shows. There are aroma’s of black fruit, blackcurrant, blackberry, vanilla and tobacco. Flavours of black fruits, with a jammy over time and smooth silky finish. The tannins have softened in 12 years but can just be picked up, smooth and luscious are 2 words to describe this wine.

Best to buy by the case and open a bottle each year. The 2 or 3 year old bottles are about £14 each so very good value for such a cracking wine
