This flag ship blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot from Strewn Vineyard shows how good Canadian wine is. Beautifully crafted there’s wonderful red and black fruit flavours, oak and chocolate notes, warm spice lingering in the background and soft tannins. Its a delicious red wine that should be sipped and enjoyed.

Alvento, Cabernet Franc, Icewine, 2021, Ontario, Canada

I have never had a bad bottle of ice wine, whether from Canada or else where and Alvento from Ontario in Canada has kept that run going. This is a great example of an ice wine. Its slightly on the lighter side which has the benefit of the flavours being shown off rather than the sugar seducing you. notes of strawberry and spice come through beautifully and the balance of flavours and structure make this a delight to sample. And sample you should, savour this wine rather than just neck it. At CAD80 a half bottle its a bit pricey but thats ice wine in general.

Canadian wines are getting better and better and can age very well. This 8 year old red wine from Pondview Estate is a classic example. Red and black fruit is beautifully integrated with notes of oak, tobacco, vanilla and hints of an earthy under note. With great length and smoothness its a red wine that say to be sipped and enjoyed rather than to be guzzled. At CAD35 a bottle its decent value.
