Tenute Cadorin Le Favole, Vigneti Castello Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Italy

Aromas of grass, grapefruit and citrus, although the citrus is more a hint. This medium colour but slightly heavier than you expect from a french Sauvignon Blanc.

I want to say this is acidic but the dribble taste says no. The grapefruit is quite domineering, theres tropical fruit flavours and hints of apple in there but it all makes for a harsh wine. This got a bronze at the Decanter International Wine Awards with 88 points but I can’t see why, sorry but I would expect far more balanced fruit flavours for a wine that got a medal.

At about £10 a bottle there’s better out there. Not one I’ll try again.

La Sonrisa de Tares, Godello 2018, Spain

Lemon, tropical, citrus aromas and flavours abound in this white wine from Spain. Made with the Godello grape. It got a 88 points, Bronze medal at the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards. There’s good acidity, minerality and balance.

I’ve never had this grape variety before but its nicely rounded and easy drinking. At under £9 a bottle its very good value, very nice wine and very worth a try. Its not going to set the world on fire but you will enjoy it.

Zenato Lugana 2016, Trebbiano Di Soave, Italy

Trebbiano Di Soave is a major Italian grape that has a lot of characteristics of Chardonnay. The major issue I had with this wine was you need to allow it to warm up. When cold it’s very neutral on the aromas and you taste Oak, very little other flavours. Give it an hour out of the fridge and you get citrus, floral notes and some creamy undertones.

It’s a nice white wine from Italy but at a little under £25 a bottle it’s very overpriced. £10 is more like the right price to me.

Domaine Louis Clerc, Condrieu Viognier 2015, France

France does some wine so much better than other countries.

Drink this a little on the warmer side to release the aromas and flavours. The first glass I had was far too cold, an hour out of the fridge and it really opens up. Its a lovely dark lemon colour, not gold but more than the usual lemon. You get smells of ripe pineapple, lemon, peach and vanilla. Taste wise its dry, medium body with a good hit of acidity. Its the peach and lemon flavors that come out first with a bit of oak, vanilla in the background.

Its got excellent length and at about £15 a bottle is very good value.

This would go well with baked Camembert, wrapped in Palmer ham, shortcrust pastry and branston pickle, see the bringoutthebranston Instagram page for their take on baked Camembert.

Sacchetto, Il Bianchetto, Sauvignon Trevenezie 2018, Italy

From the north east of Italy this is a pretty standard italian white wine ready to drink sooner rather than later.

This is a light wine in smell and taste, there’s a decent amount of fruit, tropical fruits flavours of lemon, pineapple and a good hit of acidity but the fruit helps off set the acidity making it easy drinking. This is a good drink now wine, ideal with fish or shell food or just on its own. At about £6 a bottle its fantastic value.

MAD, Furmint from Tokaji 2016, Hungary

Tokaji is well known for sweet desert wines but it also does dry wine rather well.

Dry, light with a distinct nod to french Chenin Blanc this is a great wine. Appley, with stone fruit flavours and hints of elderflower. Its well structured, good length with balance in all respects. I could give a greater description but I’m liking the wine too much.

At £15 a bottle spot on the mark for quality and price.

Fritz Haag, trocken, Riesling, Braunebergee 2018, Germany

Germany does some great wine, unfortunately they keep a lot of it. This is one that got out and is over in the UK.

Subtle on all fronts, delicate with soft blossom aromas and a taste of white peach. It’s not in your face with multiple aromas or flavours, it’s just delightful.

Volkacher Kirchberg, Silvaner Trocken 2009, Germany

Sweet, unaspirating and dumped over here was what German wines reputation was in the 1970’s and 80’s. Black Tower has a lot to answer for,t  this is great because it means that there’s all these fantastic wines out there from Germany no one knows about. A little bit of investigation and you get a gem, this is one of them, esp as this stuck in someone’s garage for 8 years it’s amazing.

Made with the Silvaner grape it’s a lovely light gold colour. It’s a medium sweet wine with good acidity and flavours. There are aromas of ripe citrus, almost stewed and honey. Flavours come out a bit lighter but do hang around the mouth for a while. That said, don’t pour a large glass as the flavours evaporate from the glass quite quickly, I put this down to it being 10 years old.

I really like this as a sip and savor wine. It went well with bread, hommus and ripe cheese though. It’s about EUR6 a bottle for younger vintages which is great value, just try it earlier than at 10 years old.

Villa Baulien, Cuvee Berengere Blanc 2014, Cateaux d’Aix en Provence, France.

Made with Rolle, 60% and Semillon 40% grapes, this is my first try of Rolle. There a clean fresh aroma of lemon and grapefruit that follows through in the taste and is added to with citrus and apple. The acidity is high, very high and the grapefruit really comes through. Its a fuller bodied wine and there is certainly strong golden colour. Put this with food such as shell fish otherwise the high acidity may be to much. It received a Comended at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards. At about £12 a bottle I expected more.

Macon Blanc Villages, Terres Secretes 2017, Burgundy, France

Macon Blanc Villages Terres Secretes is a value white burgundy wine. It’s a clear, clean looking wine. As with most dry white wine from the area it has aromas and flavours of citrus and yellow fruits and a little sweetness. It’s a good  balanced wine that at £12 is fairly price for a white burgundy.
