Domaines Vinsmoselle, Grand Premier Cru, Riesling 2011, Luxembourg

Luxembourg is not the place you may think of for quality wine but this Grand Premier Cru Riesling from Domaines Vinsmoselle shows what can be done.

At 9 years old there’s lots of green apple and petroleum notes on the nose. There’s freshness and balance on the taste with grass, lemon and lime flavours and that petroleum notes that linger.

Its quite gorgeous, if you like older Riesling. Fortunately I do but you may wish to drink this earlier rather than later.

At £15 a bottle is bang on the money for value, quality isn’t cheap but you don’t need to pay a fortune for it either.

Lo Abarca, Riesling 2018, Chile

A half decent dry Riesling is one of the best white wines in my book. This was quite a surprise for me. I can’t remember having a Chilean Riesling before or least it wasn’t memorable. This is subtle, aromas and flavours of lemon and lime and its light which is refreshing. The acidity is very well balance with the flavours and i found this was great on its own. Put it was shellfish and you have a winner.

At about £12 a bottle its right on the ball for summer drinking,

Fritz Haag, trocken, Riesling, Braunebergee 2018, Germany

Germany does some great wine, unfortunately they keep a lot of it. This is one that got out and is over in the UK.

Subtle on all fronts, delicate with soft blossom aromas and a taste of white peach. It’s not in your face with multiple aromas or flavours, it’s just delightful.

Motzenbäcker Hoheburg Riesling 2014

German Riesling can be bloody marvelous. The issue in the UK is getting the good stuff. This one is one of the good stuff, although this was purchased in Germany in a vineyard association trip. There are aromas of pear, honey and subtle smell of petrol, refined not in your face. This is a dry Riesling but the finish is rounded, there’s plenty of acidity but the fruit flavours that you initially smell are what come to fore to make this a well balanced wine.

Drink it over a few evenings to really enjoy it.
